A ho-hum title that only true Dinotopia fans will enjoy, well the rest should ignore this game.

Okay, so let’s get this straight. Developers are actually making titles before they know whether that show or movie it’s based on will be a hit? This idea is ludicrous, and that also goes to those people that made Ecks V.S. Sever. Although these creators may have a hit, it is a very risky thing to do. The developers took more of a risk when releasing Dinotopia- The Timestone Pirates, which is based on a miniseries that got mixed reviews.
The story is basically about a man that has to gather T-Rex eggs that were stolen from their mothers by evil Pirates. You must get these eggs scattered accross Dinotopia before the Dinosaur’s get mad and destroy Dinotopia.
Now, the story is nothing special and the gameplay isn’t terrific either. During this “Journey” you use you’re special staff against enemies to perform various magical abilities. There are two Magical attacks in this game, paralyzation, and a special technique that kills an enemy with one shot. If that sounds interesting to you, read on and you’ll wipe that smile off of your face. The gameplay in this game is very confusing, and when too close to an enemy attacks don’t work, and I just couldn’t seem to figure out the exact spot to grab onto when climbing over a ledge. Other than that, playing the game is just not that fun. I was trying to figure out a way to enjoy it but I just couldn’t. There were just so many flaws in the gameplay that I am forced to give it a low grade.
The music in this game is very repetitive, there are about five tracks in this game, and none of which really excited me. Something I found ridiculous was the little sound you hear when you die. It’s as if the creators forgot to include the rest of the sound. Although it was composed nicely, the music just didn’t do anything for me. There are barely any Sound Effects. Maybe the “swish” of your staff can count as one, which did sound decent. Overall, although the sound was created nicely, it’s just not very exciting and doesn’t feel like an adventure when you’re playing it.
Graphics are definitely one of the only good qualities in this game. Very crisp and clear, and give off sort of a funky feel when you play it. The animations are decent, but nothing out-of-the-ordinary. The characters do look kind of cool, I have to admit, the problem is there isn’t much variety. There is a total of around 6 different-looking characters in this title. Even so, the graphics are the true high point in this not-so-great title.
When it comes to replay value, this game is your average platformer, which can usually be put down for a long period of time when beaten, then played over again when bored. The game isn’t terrible, so some may come back for a second, possibly a third time. Be aware that when you play this game more then once, you will probably experience a much easier game to beat then it was at first.
