Last year Sega announced it would be bringing a game containing a collection of Sonic games from the Sega Genesis to the Nintendo Gamecube. That game is Sonic Mega Collection, which is a collection of all the Sonic games from the Sega Genesis put together on one disk, including a few extra classic Genesis games. The games featured show no major improvements from the originals; they are all straight up perfectly emulated ports, down to the very last sprite.
Graphics
Since this game is a selection of 7 to 12 year old games packaged all on one disk, you can't come start up your GameCube expecting much from the graphics department. The graphics have pretty much been emulated perfectly from their original state. So it's safe to say that the graphics shall be just as you remember them from when you first played them. And if you haven't played these games, then think of the graphics as those of Gameboy Advance, except slightly better.
Sound
The audio, just like the graphics, is just like it was in the originals. The soundtrack is definitely not high quality by today's standard. You really notice just how bad the sound quality of the old Sega intro is; where the Sega logo comes onto the screen and sings SEGA. But overall, hearing old tunes from the past isn't that bad, it brings back fond memories.
Gameplay
From the start you have seven games unlocked: Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. In addition to those 7 games, you can unlock 5 more bonus games as well as many other extras. You can obtain these unlock able bonuses by beating the games.
Sonic The Hedgehog 1, 2, and 3 are the original Sonic games. They all feature the same fast-paced gameplay that is the trademark of the series. Sonic & Knuckles features a new playable character from Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Knuckles the Echidna. In this game you play as both Sonic and Knuckles. You go through the same levels with both characters, but each has his own unique way of getting through it.
Sonic 3D Blast was a bad attempt at making a 3D Sonic game. The game play is slow and boring. The level designs aren't so great either. It just doesn't feel like a Sonic game, but helps give diversity to the collection.
Sonic 2
Sonic Spinball and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine are two games are not traditional Sonic games. Sonic Spinball is a pinball game, where the ball is Sonic and you have to go throughout large machines gathering the emeralds by hitting switches and entering the right tunnels. The gameplay gets choppy in some parts, but is a fun little game in this collection. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is a fun little puzzle game similar to Dr. Mario or Puyo Puyo, staring Dr. Robotnik.
Final Thought
Overall, Sonic Mega Collection is a great collection of some classic games. If you're a fan of Sonic and have always wanted to go back and play the Sonic games of the 2D era, or just someone looking for a game full of pure fun, Sonic Mega Collection is worth $39.99. If you have never owned or played these Sonic games before, Mega Collection is a must buy.
Please note as well that the score below out of 40 doesn't accurately represent the overall value of the game because graphics and sound do not necessarily play a factor in the game appeal.
